Christopher Scofield embarked on a mission of personal improvement on June 24, 2010 when he decided to quit smoking. His sister, having just given birth to his third nephew, pleaded with him to finally quit in an attempt to avoid contracting cancer, thus prolonging his life. He chose June 24, because it was his grandmothers’ and uncles’ shared birthday, and both had pleaded with him over the years to quit. Using the Nicoderm patch for the first few days seemed to do the trick. For the next six months, he was able to control his nicotine cravings, but was using food as a substitute. He gained approximately 45 lbs topping out at 305 lbs. He had finally had enough and knew he needed to make some “Life Changes” and now was the time.
Subsequently, Chris worked diligently to improve his weight by following a regimented diet plan and exercising whenever he could. Chris works two jobs totaling a minimum of 80 hours a week, so his exercise time was limited. Initially, he started biking to work 8 miles a day roundtrip, as a way to fit exercise into his already taxed scheduled. As time progressed, Chris realized that he thoroughly enjoyed biking to work and began bicycling whenever possible. Chris’ health has improved dramatically (partly due to his new love of eating a salad from “Saladworks” every day. He has since lost approximately 90 lbs. with the help of medicine, exercise, and a healthier diet.
About six months ago, Chris made a decision to start using his conditioning to help others who are less fortunate. Chris signed up for several bicycling fundraisers to support the on-going battles many people face such as Multiple Sclerosis. Chris has inspired many friends and acquaintances to eat healthy, exercise more and to donate their time and money to charitable organizations. What began as one step back in June of 2010 has grown into a personal journey to benefit others, where his own health changed from an obstacle into a tool that he chose to use selflessly for worthwhile causes.
The first cause is the 25th Annual Irish Pub Tour de Shore, a 65 mile ride on Sunday July 29th. from Philadelphia PA to Atlantic City, NJ to support the Childrens Charities of the Irish Pub and the Philadelphia Police Dept. Secondly, is the Team Livestrong Challenge Philly, a Lance Armstrong foundation in support of cancer research. The Sunday August 19th 45 mile ride in Montgomery County PA should be exciting. And Lastly, is the 2012 Bike MS: City To Shore 150 mile ride. The ride takes place on Sept 29 and 30 and is the cornerstone of his motivation, having many friends affected with this disease.
